Super Jock'n Jill Q & A
Super jock’n Jill
1. Super Jock 'n Jill has been a part of the running community for many years. You now have a second location in Redmond. Ty, can you please highlight some of the history of the store and your community involvement?
The store opened in 1975 when running wasn't as popular as it is now. Running around Greenlake was definitely not what it is now. Laurel James started the store and her son Chet James and his wife Judy Albrecht bought it from her in 1997. The goal of the store has always centered around the community. We try to provide resources for our community through Medical Nights and hosting runs or walks from the store while also donating to local community needs. (Auctions, shoes for shelters, races, etc.) We support our other local businesses and hope to provide good jobs for those working for us.
2. What sets Super Jock 'n Jill apart from other athletic shoe stores?
We have never really thought of ourselves as being in Retail. We don't really like to "sell" anything. We do our best to find great products that we think are a good value for the customer so they don't have to do all the research. We see ourselves as the sort of filter for them. When customers come in we want to match those products up as best as we can with their needs at hopefully the best price we can. Our goal is not to sell our customers a bunch of stuff but more to create a trusting relationship for years.
3. How are employees able to assist in helping the client choose the best pair of shoes for their feet?
It takes a lot of time to learn about all of the different products. There are so many types of shoes and inserts out there. Once the employee understands how all of the products can help the customer in certain situations then it becomes a bit of problem solving. This is not an exact science so the problem solving and listening to the customer and their issues is critical in finding a solution. We do gait analysis as part of the process but that is only a small part of it as each customer differs in what they like or need.
4. What other items does Super Jock 'n Jill sell that would be helpful for people who are walkers and runners?
We have so many fun things in the store. From nice technical apparel pieces to phone carriers and sunglasses we have a bunch of things that every runner may like. They may not need it all but it's fun to see all of the different products.
5. Do you have any recommendations on good places to walk and/or run at this time?
I think it's best to find areas that you can keep your distance from others. It can be difficult with so many people out and about. There are plenty of parks around that have space for separation or just walking around your neighborhood. Heading out early in the morning has been a good way for me to avoid the traffic.
