Tendon Pain in Runners & Hikers
Dr. Troy Henning joined me for a 60 minute webinar with great depth and command of the latest research. If you are a runner, skier, or hiker that has been battling chronic symptoms he laid out a number of rehab considerations as well as discussing the latest research in regenerative medicine. Dr. Henning covered all the aspects of both conservative and more aggressive treatment for tendinopathies and stubborn tendinitis.
Dr. Henning and I share a similar philosophy in the treatment of runners and those experiencing symptoms doing the activities that the love and frankly physchomogically need. There is usually a great conservative runway for trying rest, strengthening, and modified intensity before getting into the more aggressive and sometimes costly treatments. That all begin said if and when that time might approach Dr. Henning has a great arsenal of tools that he utilizes. I would highly recommend watching the webinar and feel free to reach out with any questions or comments.
The items covered in detail during the webinar were the following:
What is tendonitis?
What is tendinosis?
How do we deal with tendinopathy?
What is the etiology of tendinopathy?
What are the risk factors that lead to tendinopathy?
How does rehabilitation effect tendinopahty?
Eccentric tendon training research
Heavy Slow Concentric tendon training research
What is the tendon morphology and mechanical properties
Current medical treatments including:
Topical Glyceryl Trinitrate (GTN)
Steroidal injections
Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP)
Shockwave Therapy
Stem Cell Therapies
Dr. Henning has a very high level of expertise and experience in treating sports injuries but especially working with hikers, climbers, and runners experiencing chronic and nagging tendinopathies. This is a great review for medical practitioners and fantastic background information for athletes, coaches, and trainers.
